At Root, we want to make your holidays healthier so that you can fully enjoy and feel great this holiday season. We’d like to share some of our favorite items and experiences that we use personally or recommend to friends and family.
1) Stainless Steel or Glass Beverage containers
Plastics are known environmental hormone disruptors and many people are making the switch to stainless steel and glass. We love the Kleen Kanteen as a stainless steel water bottle choice and the Zula Atlas with flip lid for a glass choice. The BKR glass bottle is also a nice option.
2) Re-useable and safer food storage
We love these re-useable stasher bags. They are made of silicone and are dishwasher safe. They close better than any other silicon food storage bag we have tried. They are a great alternative to using plastic bags. These are perfect for packing healthier school snacks too!
3) Cast-iron skillet
If you know someone who loves to cook but doesn’t have a cast-iron skillet, this would make a great gift. Learning to care for a cast-iron skillet takes a little bit of effort, but they literally last forever and you don’t have to worry about chemicals from teflon flaking into your food. We love this skillet by Lodge.
4) Stainless steel hot beverage tumblers/mugs and straws
Save the environment, reduce your exposure to plastics, and keep your beverages hot (or cold) with these options. We love the Yeti stainless steel tumbler as well as these stainless steel coffee mugs with a handle by Avito. You can do your part to help the environment by switching to stainless steel straws too.
5) Safer Skin Care
Many over the counter skin care products are full of things we shouldn’t be putting on our skin, such as parabens and phthalates. We are big fans of BeautyCounter, because of their commitment to quality products and safer ingredients.
6) Instant Pot + a cookbook to go along with it
This is the perfect gift for anyone you know who is busy but likes to cook. You can cook up quick and nutritious meals in no time in the instant pot. There are many options for Instant Pot cookbooks on Amazon but we like this one here. We’ll be posting some instant pot meal ideas in the future too!
7) UV Light Therapy Light
Boost your mood and help re-set your circadian rhythm this winter with this UV Therapy light.
8) Blue Light Blocking Glasses
Staring at a computer or phone screen all day can lead to eye strain and keep you up at night. We like this option for glasses here.
Other ideas not pictured here:
The My Calm Blanket for reducing anxiety and improving night time sleep.
Adult coloring books are great for stress reduction.
While we like the ideas above, we understand that experiences may bring greater value and joy. Here are some ideas for experiences for growth in health and wellness.
Consider gifting a Real Plans membership to make planning healthy meals easier, or a few months of a meal kit delivery service like Home Chef, or Sakara Life for the plant-based eater in your life.
A gift card or classes to the Grand Rapids Center for Mindfulness.
They offer a great mindfulness based stress reduction course, and are launching a mindfulness for beginners workshop on January 5.
